Rev 22:12 "And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city."
Why is it that only those who keep His commandments can enter into New Jerusalem!
Purpose of Commandments
1Tim 1:5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,
In the Old Covenant, any Jew who kept the commandments of Moses will be transformed to be like the good Samaritan filled with love for God and men. Without the commandments the Priesthood and Levites were hypocrites and merciless. (Please read Luke 10:25-37)
1John 3:18-19 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.
Similarly, when we keep His commandments we express our sincere love for God. Then we are found worthy for our Lord Jesus to baptize us with the Spirit of truth. With truth we are free from all bondages and worldliness. We will then sincerely love our neighbours and also love one another as Jesus had loved us.
John 14:15-17a "If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth"
Cannot enter New Jerusalem
Rev 21:23, 27 The city (New Jerusalem) had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light... But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
Without truth, all these so-called born again Christians will deceive themselves that they are spiritual when they are so carnal and worldly. Galatian 5 gives a good list of those still walking in the flesh.
Gal 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Those outside New Jerusalem
Rev 22:15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
They are like dogs who return back to its vormit just like last days' Christians.
Last Days' Christians
2 Tim 3:1-7 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
It looks like that majority of last days' Christians with be found outside the New Jerusalem with some possibly in the lake of fire.
Brethren, do not be the norm in the last days but be transformed by His word and Spirit by keeping His commandments.
